CDA National Conference Reports

In partnership with the Canadian Dance Assembly, New Works and Made in BC, CADA/BC was proud to send 1 Member and 2 Board Members to the 2012 CDA National Conference & Arts Day on the Hill.

Please see below excerpts of reports from our 3 representatives...CADA/BC Board Chair Josh Martin, Board Member Kim Sato and Member Caroline Liffmann:

  • Strengthened vision of what CADA/BC does and how it fits into the greater network of dance service providers and larger dance community
  • Many attendees were surprised and delighted how large CADA/BC is growing...We are building a reputation of a solid organization
  • Strengthened my understanding of my position as a Board Member
  • Much better understanding of CDA, what it does, how it is structured, the potential for member participation and the challenges of their current standing council model
  • Very useful to put faces to names, especially for CDA staff, standing councils and CADA-ON
  • Was relieved to see others from all provinces concerned with how to make CDA stronger
  • Was able to explain why some dance artists may not connect to the I Love Dance campaign
  • Optimism for CADA-ON connection
  • Became curious about RQD stats...What does CADA/BC look like side-by-side? What should we be striving for?
  • Attended Arts Day On The Hill with Canadian Arts Coalition...Met Liberal MP Joyce Murray and spoke about CADA/BC and arts funding necessities
  • Participation in Arts Day on the Hill and the Arts Caucus meeting illuminated the role of advocacy in keeping the arts visible to politicians as a cultural and economic priority
  • Excited about the work being done with dance video and digital forms for dance...Looking forward to being an advocate for more support of this form
  • Gained insights into my own art practice
  • Met a lot of interesting people and opened lines for future conversations/collaborations

Updates to CADA/BC's Fees & Rates Standards

Generated from national arts resources and CADA/BC Membership statistics, CADA/BC's Fees & Rates Standards recommend a minimum rate for different types of dance work.

These Rates, used by numerous arts councils, facilitate contract negotiations and recognize the value of professional experience in the individual artist. We reinforce that a minimum rate is a starting point, not an end point!

In March 2011, we conducted a survey of our Fees & Rates Standards. Using that information, as of October 31, 2012, we have updated the document.

see the updated document HERE

Please take the time to read some of the supporting documents from the background work done on these changes:

Speak With Your Feet

This month's advocacy challenge...

Join a Committee/Advisory Council.

Are you an advocate for professional standards in dance?

Great at fundraising?

Passionate about training?

Looking to develop new skills?

In addition to our Board of Directors and Staff, we rely upon a number of groups and volunteers to ensure the success of CADA/BC.

We are always looking for Members to help out with committees, give their voices to advisory councils and to lend an extra hand when the need arises.

Til Dec 11, we are looking for help selling our See More Dance raffle tix!!!

Please contact Kristina Lemieux to get invovled.

Plenty of organizations rely on the contribution of committee members. Check company websites for info.

Joining such a group is a great way to become more familiar with what goes in to running an arts organization. It is also a great way to become better acquainted with a specific organization.

CADA/BC and its Members,

ensuring dance remains a vital part of our culture.
